PVBLIC Foundation 2022: A Year In Review

By: Stephen Keppel, President, PVBLIC Foundation

Happy New Year and thank you for being part of the PVBLIC Foundation community. As we start an exciting new year, we want to take the opportunity to look back at our work in 2022, a year exemplified by growth, vision, partnership and impact. As the world re-opened after the pandemic PVBLIC was ready and prepared to hit the ground running and executed what we do best: global media campaigns, high-level convenings and impactful programs.

We supported media campaigns that are helping advance sustainable development such as the Conscious Fashion Campaign, OneTen.org and the UNDP’s Don’t Choose Extinction campaign to end fossil fuel subsidies.

In-person events returned this year kicking off with the SDG Media Zone at the Dubai Expo 2020 and the United Nations Ocean Conference, as well as the SDG Media Summit, and Latino Impact Summit returning to the United Nations Headquarters this Fall.

This year, PVBLIC along with partners Industria Mexicana de Coca Cola hosted two events in Mexico to advance sustainable development in Latin America and the region. For the first time we organized events outside of the capital bringing the sustainability conversation to Monterrey and Mérida.

The SDG Data Alliance, PVBLIC’s largest program, launched SDG.org, educated data partners in developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America on how to build geospatial data hubs and helped bring more than 15 country partners to attend events around the world to build capacity and build a global network of geospatial leaders focused on achieving the SDGs.

The Family Office for Sustainable Development initiative (FOSD) focused on the engagement between its members through different high-level conversations including a UN Briefing Session on Afghanistan, and PVBLIC hosted events during the UN General Assembly in New York and the COP27 climate negotiations in Egypt. FOSD is managed by PVBLIC Foundation and the UN Office for Partnerships, and aims to connect small groups of global prime-mover Family Offices committed to advancing the SDGs.

We are proud of all that has been achieved in 2022 but know that we need to continue to learn, grow and expand our impact in 2023. We can only do that with the right partners, old and new. Thank you all for being part of this community that is dedicated to improving the world and advancing sustainable development around the world.

MEDIA & CAMPAIGNS

OneTen.org

At PVBLIC, we firmly believe that media has the power to drive social change. We utilize the power of media to create an impact and work strategically to pair media assets with key nonprofits at the local, national and global levels. This year we partnered with OneTen, an organization that aims to close the opportunity gap for Black talent in America. Their mission is to hire, promote and advance one million Black individuals who do not have a four-year degree into family-sustaining careers over the next 10 years. 2 PVBLIC helped amplify their mission by placing Out-of Home Media campaigns in 13 US markets. The media mix included billboards, bus shelters, bus ads, and grassroots signage within barber shops, nail salons, convenience stores and laundry mats in target zip codes. The response has been tremendous and Oneten.org plans to continue rolling out the media campaigns in additional US markets in 2023.

SDG Media Zone

Organized by the UN Department of Global Communications, in collaboration with the PVBLIC Foundation, the SDG Media Zone takes the conversation on advancing the 2030 Agenda out of the policy sphere and into the public discourse through impactful in-depth interviews and conversations on global issues that matter to people everywhere. Since 2016, the SDG Media Zone has been one of the main features of major events at the United Nations, including the UN General Assembly high-level week, the UN Youth Forum and the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

The SDG Media Zone returned to in-person events this year hosting 3 sessions at high-level convenings around the world: Dubai Expo 2020, UN Ocean Conference, and UNGA 77. These 3 sessions had a combined total of 31 conversations and 111 speakers all working to advance the 2030 Agenda.

SDG Lounge Sessions

This year, PVBLIC Foundation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), SAWA, and ESG News debuted the SDG Lounge at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in late June. The lounge offered a space for advertising, marketing and communications leaders to address the most pressing issues the world is facing today. The SDG Lounge emerged from the success of the SDG Media Zone and SDG Media Summit, high-level events which have traditionally been held at the United Nations headquarters and at major convening's around the world.

PROGRAMS

SDG Data Alliance

The SDG Data Alliance is a multi-stakeholder initiative focused on bringing geographic information systems, or GIS, technology and capabilities to developing nations in order to accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2022 the SDG Data Alliance team launched SDG.org. The platform hosts the numerous data hubs that are being created and also serves as a learning center for data alliance countries, governments, data hub developers and civil society. The Learning Center provides dozens of resources for users to build data hubs, improve their GIS skills and learn about SDGs.

Members of the SDG Data Alliance met in person, some for the first time, this year at the 2022 Esri User Conference. The PVBLIC team brought together partners from more than 12 countries to engage, train, and take the next steps in creating their own SDG Data Hubs through workshops, interactive meetings, and attending sessions during the Esri User Conference.

SDG Data Alliance representatives attended various United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) events. In August, PVBLIC Foundation President, Stephen Keppel had the opportunity to speak at the twelfth session of the UN-GGIM about the work and success of the SDG Data Alliance.

In November, SDG Data Alliance representatives Ines Mato, John Kedar and Charles Brigham attended the UN-GGIM regional summit in Chile. Ines Mato and John Kedar presented an overview of the Data Alliance and IGIF Country-level Action Plan. The event was also an opportunity to meet with data alliance countries and discuss their challenges, successes and next steps for their work with the Alliance.

PVBLIC’s Executive Chairman, Sergio Fernández de Córdova, gave remarks at the 2nd plenary session of the UNWGIC in Hyderabad, India, sharing strategic insight on leveraging media and public-private partnerships and discussing the SDG Data Alliance.

Family Offices for Sustainable Development (FOSD)

Organized by the PVBLIC Foundation and the UN Office for Partnerships, Family Offices for Sustainable Development (FOSD) brings together small groups of global prime-mover Family Offices committed to advancing the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals in order to create greater impact via collaboration with UN agencies and with each other.

Throughout the year, PVBLIC Foundation hosted a series of activations and events that inspired and engaged Family Offices to drive social and environmental change and collaborate on pressing global issues. The first of them was the FOSD Inaugural Summit at Earthx2022 in Dallas, Texas where we gathered more than 50 Family Offices around climate change, sustainable finance and blockchain for impact. FOSD also hosted multiple sessions of the SDG Lounge during UNGA 77, one of them alongside Club de Madrid and featuring the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark. During COP27, FOSD hosted sessions that served as a space for conversation and networking alongside UN Representatives, Heads of State, and international organizations covering multiple global agendas.

As part of the FOSD’s education initiative PVBLIC also hosted a briefing focused on the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. This session gave member-families an in-depth look at the UN response, and the road ahead for the country.

In 2023 expect an in-depth newsletter devoted to the FOSD initiative and new opportunities for the FOSD community to educate, engage, and activate.
