The year 2024 marks a significant milestone in the global movement to end violence against women and girls. As we observe the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we reflect on the progress achieved and recognize the persistent challenges in addressing one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide.
As a proud partner of UN Women, PVBLIC Foundation is committed to supporting the UNiTE Campaign and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, held annually from November 25 to December 10. This campaign, launched by UN Women, unites individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide to raise awareness, share solutions, and drive action to end gender-based violence.
Understanding the UNiTE Campaign
The UNiTE Campaign is more than a call to action—it is a movement that brings together diverse stakeholders to create a world free from violence against women and girls. Operating under the unifying theme of #NoExcuse, the campaign emphasizes prevention, survivor-centered approaches, and accountability.
Each year, the campaign mobilizes communities to address persistent issues, such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, and harmful practices, while also highlighting emerging challenges like online abuse and the disproportionate impacts of crises such as climate change and conflict. A signature aspect of the campaign is the call to wear orange, symbolizing a brighter future without violence.
The High-Level Meeting to Mark the 25th Anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
To kick off this year’s UNiTE Campaign, the President of the General Assembly will host a high-level meeting on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This event marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the General Assembly resolution that proclaimed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
This high-level meeting will mark this important anniversary as called for in UNGA Resolution Twenty-Fifth anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (A/RES/78/288) and provide an opportunity for Member States to highlight achievements, share best practices and identify gaps and challenges to eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls. The agenda includes:
Opening and Plenary Sessions: Remarks from high-level representatives of the United Nations, Member States, and civil society organizations, highlighting best practices, ongoing challenges, and opportunities for collaboration.
Discussions Aligned with the Beijing Declaration: Sessions will align with the principles of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, aiming to galvanize efforts toward eliminating violence against women and girls as its 30th anniversary approaches in 2025.
Focus on Inclusive Solutions: The meeting will address critical issues such as the impact of technology-facilitated violence, the importance of survivor-centered services, and the role of legislative frameworks in driving systemic change.
Participants will also have the opportunity to share statements on behalf of their delegations, emphasizing their commitment to this critical agenda.
The event will be held in person in the General Assembly Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (EST) and broadcast live in six UN languages on UN Web TV.
Moreover, on November 25, 2024, The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Women will publish their third joint report on global estimates of gender-related killings of women and girls by intimate partners or family members. The report will present new global and regional estimates for 2023, available trends & country data, and selected best practices for preventing femicide.
Building on the report, UNiTE digital campaign is drawing attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women under the theme, “Every 10 Minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women”.
We encourage you to actively participate in this year’s UNiTE Campaign by sharing messages of solidarity, spreading awareness, and supporting initiatives to end violence against women and girls.
