PVBLIC hosted a Digital Media Zone (DMZ) at the United Nations on December 15-16, facilitating a dialogue among media influencers, civil society, and the United Nations related to the objectives and outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) +10 High Level Meeting of the General Assembly.
The President of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Mogens Lykketoft convened the WSIS +10 meeting at the United Nations, high-level representatives from all Member States and relevant stakeholders of the World Summit on the Information Society were in attendance. The meeting assessed the ten-year progression of the Geneva Plan, reviewing growth, challenges, and future action within the ICT Sector.
The General Assembly adopted an outcome document on the overall review of the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society towards the end of the two-day 10-year review meeting.
The DMZ event ran parallel to this momentous General Assembly meeting, and allowed media influencers, bloggers and journalists to gather valuable information to share with broader audiences beyond the United Nations. The event was streamed live on DMZ.news and MOSH. hosted an official social media page, engaging global participation.
PVBLIC Co-Founder and Chairman, Sergio Fernandez de Cordova commented on the importance of media reporting and engagement on the WSIS +10 meeting stating, “We were excited to help the United Nations by facilitating the Digital Media Zone to help engage a global audience. Partnerships and open dialogues are essential to sustainable development efforts, and events such as this help inform and activate the general public.”
Melissa Jun Rowley, Executive Director of thetoolbox.org, conducted various interviews at the DMZ, with many UN representatives, official speakers involved in the WSIS +10 meeting, and other stakeholders interested in ICT for development. Some interviewees included Deniz Aydin, Policy Fellow for Access Now and the youngest speaker at WSIS+10, Taffere Tesfachew, Director of UNCTAD, and Brian Collins, CEO of One Horizon Group.
