Over the course of 2023, the PVBLIC Foundation and the United Nations Department of Global Communications hosted SDG Media Zones during three high-level United Nations events spanning from Doha to New York City, each of which contributed significantly to the global dialogue on sustainable development. Collectively, these SDG Media Zones brought together over 295 inspiring speakers who shared their insights and experiences during 100 sessions, which included powerful discussions covering subjects related to all 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals. From gender equality to climate change, waste reduction to financial technology, and more, the SDG Media Zone saw powerful changemakers from around the world discuss crucial issues facing our planet.
The first SDG Media Zone convened during the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), which took place from March 5- 9 in Doha, Qatar. The SDG Media Zone: LCD5 highlighted specific issues from the LDC perspective, including climate change, youth engagement, and global partnerships. This was the SDG Media Zones first time having a presence in Qatar and allowed the opportunity to bring together 49 speakers over 13 sessions. Some of the notable speakers included H.E. Agnes Mary Chimbiri-Molande, Permanent Representative of Malawi to the U.N.; H.E. Marjan Kamstra, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the State of Qatar; Csaba Kőrösi, United Nations General Assembly President and the discussions were covered by reputable media outlets Africa News, Aljazeera, Dev Discourse, and Medium.
From March 22 to 24 the SDG Media Zone made its triumphant return to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City for the first time since September 2019 due to a pause in in-person convenings as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The SDG Media Zone: UN Water Conference focused on the transformation and solutions needed to achieve SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and how the global community is accelerating progress. The SDG Media Zone hosted 22 sessions and welcomed 71 speakers over three days, including Matt Damon, Actor, Producer, Screenwriter, and Co-founder of water.org; Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications and Tracy Reese, Founder and Creative Director, Hope for Flowers. These sessions were joined by media groups such as Devex, National Geographic, and UN News.
The SDG Media Zone concluded the year with the highly anticipated 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) from September 17 to 22 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The SDG Media Zone: UNGA 78 focused on the SDGs' midpoint and a comprehensive progress review. The Zone was committed to highlighting the tireless efforts of the global community over the week, hosting 65 insightful sessions featuring 175 speakers over the course of 6 days. Some notable speakers included Dia Mirza, Actor and UNEP Goodwill Ambassador; Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Actor and UNDP Goodwill Ambassador; Natalie Portman, Actor, Director, Author, and Activist; Ciara, Grammy Award Winning Singer and Songwriter, and Nyle DiMarco, Actor and Advocate. The SDG Media Zone hosted 43+ media partners, totaling over 17K+ views on the UN Web T.V. video views and reached millions through curated media partner distribution including Conde Nast, ABC News, CNN Digital, Time Magazine, Sky News, and more.
